Hey, y’all! Looking for a recap of everything that went down during Season 2 of The Umbrella Academy? Then look no further because we’ve got a rundown of everything you need to know about the Hargreeves siblings’ time-jumping adventures back in 1963 Dallas.

From dealing with racist bigots and chauvinistic husbands to racing against time to stop another apocalypse (not to mention the assassination of a certain American president), the Hargreeves must once again band together to save the world and make it out alive. Worst of all? They have to do it all without cell phones.

So kick up your boots, make sure Carl’s away on business in Waco, and don’t go too hard on the laughing gas because it’s time for a Southern-fried journey back in time.

How does the Umbrella Academy end up in the past?

You may remember that at the end of Season 1, Five (Aidan Gallagher) managed to take all of his superhero siblings back in time mere seconds before the world ended. The good news? They’re all sent back to ’60s-era Dallas. The bad news? They don’t exactly all arrive at the same time. Klaus (Robert Sheehan) and Ben (Justin H. Min) fall out of a portal into a Dallas alley in 1960. Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) arrives in that same alley in 1961. Luther (Tom Hopper) lands in 1962, Diego (David Castañeda) lands in September 1963, and Viktor (Elliot Page) lands in October 1963. When Five finally drops into the alley on Nov. 25, 1963, he sees all of his siblings die in a nuclear holocaust. Luckily, Hazel (Cameron Britton) saves him and brings him 10 days into the past to give him time to stop the nukes. Hazel also slips him a tape labeled “Frankel Footage,” which captures the family patriarch, Reginald Hargreeves, on the grassy knoll during JFK’s assassination. Dun dun DUN!

Does the Umbrella Academy try to stop Reginald from assassinating JFK?

First, Five has to bring them all together. Since they all landed in Dallas, the Hargreeves siblings’ lives have veered into wildly different directions. Klaus is now a reluctant cult leader while Allison is married to a civil rights activist named Ray (Yusuf Gatewood). Diego is in a mental institution, where he’s befriended a fellow inmate named Lila (Ritu Arya), and Luther is working as a body man for the gangster Jack Ruby (John Kapelos). Meanwhile, after arriving in Dallas with complete amnesia, Viktor is now living on a farm with the kind Sissy (Marin Ireland), her crappy husband Carl (Stephen Bogaert), and their young son Harlan (Justin Paul Kelly).

Got it — so when they all come together do they try to stop Reginald?

You bet. Diego, Lila, and Five confront Reginald during a meeting of the secretive “Majestic 12” at the local Mexican consulate. They’re not exactly successful, but Diego does meet a woman named Grace (Jordan Claire Robbins), who clearly served as the model for the robot Reginald designed to be their mom. Later, Reginald invites all of the Hargreeves siblings to a “light supper” at a tiki bar where he’s very, very mean to them. Seriously, this guy is really not cut out to be a father. Cruelty aside, Reginald isn’t exactly the main villain of Season 2.

Oh! Who is the villain of The Umbrella Academy Season 2?

Remember that young woman Lila who was hanging around Diego? She’s actually the adopted daughter of our old friend the Handler (Kate Walsh). After surviving getting shot in the head thanks to a conveniently placed metal plate, the Handler is back to plot in the shadows and scheme her way to the top. She uses Lila to protect Five and then convinces Five to murder the Commission’s entire board of directors. The Handler then stages a fashion-forward coup and installs herself as a despotic leader. Needless to say, she’s not exactly the world’s most likable boss.

No surprise there. Are any other people plotting in the midcentury shadows?

Yes! At the start of the season, the Commission sends “the Swedes,” three creepy (and lethal) brothers, to take care of the timeline-meddling Hargreeves. They manage to cause plenty of murderous mayhem while hunting down their targets, including knocking off the kooky local Texan Elliott (Kevin Rankin), who’d been letting a large number of Hargreeves family members use his place as a crash pad. Sadly, things don’t work out so great for them either. The Handler eventually leads the Scandinavian hitmen into a trap, which results in the death of one brother, while Allison “rumors” the death of another, leaving a single Swede.

So is it the Swedes or the Handler who assassinated JFK?

Neither! It turns out that the nuclear holocaust comes about because JFK survives the assassination attempt. At the exact moment JFK’s motorcade is passing Dealey Plaza, Viktor is being brutally tortured inside an FBI building. The psychological torture causes him to explode with energy, resulting in a very big bang. JFK’s car then speeds away from the crumbling building and, thinking the Russians are responsible, America declares war on the Soviet Union. One thing leads to another and … BOOM!

Back up — why is Viktor being tortured in an FBI building?

While Viktor is working as a nanny on the Cooper’s farm, he and Sissy fall madly in love. He convinces Sissy to leave her horrible husband, Carl, and run away with him, but unfortunately Carl finds out what the two of them are plotting before they can escape. As they’re trying to leave, they’re pulled over by the local highway patrol. Viktor tries to fight them off with his superpowers, but he’s restrained and brought into an FBI building for questioning. The questioning is not exactly gentle (to put it lightly), resulting in Viktor having a big ol’ freak-out, causing the big ol’ boom.

So, are the Hargreeves able to stop the apocalypse?

Yes! After discovering what’s going to happen, the siblings band together to get through to Viktor before he loses control. Ben is able to reach Viktor in his subconscious and calm him down before he causes the world-ending explosion. (After all of that, JFK still gets assassinated, though. Sorry, Jackie.)

Does the Umbrella Academy ever make it out of the ’60s?

Yes, but not until they fight some final battles. After the assassination, the siblings rush to Sissy’s farm. Viktor accidentally gave Harlan some of his powers after saving his life, and the child is now extremely dangerous. Viktor saves Harlan, but the Handler and Lila show up at that exact moment with an army of Commission operatives. Viktor wipes out the army of operatives, but the Academy then has to fight their most dangerous foe yet: Lila. Turns out, Lila can mirror the powers of others, making her almost unbeatable. Luckily, after discovering that the Handler arranged the death of her parents, Lila turns on her. Thanks to some quick time-jumping by Five, the remaining Swede arrives and kills the Handler in revenge. Lila disappears while Sissy and Harlan hop in a car and drive off to a new life in California.

Wow! So then — after all of that — they’re finally able to get back to the present?

Yes, but probably not to the one they were hoping for! After using a time-traveling briefcase belonging to one of the dead operatives, the Hargreeves travel back to the Umbrella Academy mansion in the present day. However, once they arrive, Reginald is there with a different group of superhero siblings called the Sparrow Academy. That seems … not great!
