Can You Guess Who’s Behind These Moments in the BTS: THE RETURN Documentary?

Please enjoy this very niche game before watching the film (sorry in advance to locals, this isn’t for you!).

There’s a joke among BTS fans that the journey down the rabbit hole often begins the same way: “I just wanted to learn their names!” One moment you’re casually looking up the band members’ full names and ages; next thing you know, you’re calling carbonara “lachimolala,” debating which member snores the loudest, tracking down j-hope’s flower bag from the group’s 2018 trip to Malta, and emailing your local representative about changing the national anthem to Ddaeng.”

This is all to say: There’s a lot to learn about BTS. Since their inception in 2013, they’ve documented their journey to global superstardom through enough behind-the-scenes content, web series, vlogs, and livestreams to fill the Library of Alexandria. But in the documentary BTS: THE RETURN, filmed by acclaimed director Bao Nguyen (The Stringer, The Greatest Night in Pop), we get the opportunity to bear witness to a completely new and unbroadcast moment for the septet. After a nearly four-year hiatus, they face an unprecedented period of uncertainty and wrestle with the kind of path they want to chart ahead.

But even as they’re tackling an unfamiliar challenge, fans will recognize the same old Bangtan they know and love. So we decided to have a little fun with this film — in a way only BTS fans could hack. Below, we invite you to discover a few of the most compelling, and, well, very BTS-core moments from the documentary, and to guess who is involved in each one. Then, see if you or your group chat got them all right by watching BTS: THE RETURN, streaming now on Netflix.

1. These two members do yoga together in the morning.

Two people stretching on yoga mats in a grassy outdoor area with trees or bushes in the background, shoes placed nearby, enjoying a calm exercise environment under sunlight.

2. This member attempts to figure out how to sample “Arirang” by plucking the melody on the guitar.

Pixelated person sitting on a black leather couch in a cozy music studio, with a guitar resting in the corner, candles on the windowsill, and various music equipment and shelves in the background.

3. This member jokes that BTS should be roommates again.

Two people interact indoors; one in the foreground is out of focus while the other, seated in a well-lit living room, is pixelated and indistinguishable. There are plants and windows in the background.

4. This member contemplates the challenge of defining what “Arirang” means to BTS.

Pixelated person reading a paper in a decorated room with patterned tapestry on walls, a microphone overhead, and a lamp-lit desk with recording equipment, giving a creative and artistic studio environment.

5. Listening to an early cut, these two members have differing opinions about how to use the “Arirang” sample in “Body to Body.”

Two people in a recording studio stand near racks of audio equipment and mixers, surrounded by soundproofed walls and acoustic paneling.

6. This member makes the group laugh by joking around in the sea.

Pixelated person standing in shallow ocean water near the shore at sunset, with gentle waves and soft lighting in the background.

7. This member doesn’t need to adjust the mic’s height after Jin exits the recording booth.

Person recording vocals in a dimly lit studio, standing in front of a microphone, image is pixelated for privacy.

8. This member decompresses between recording sessions by playing catch outside.

Two people outdoors in a parking lot; one person in the foreground blurred, another in the background standing on one leg as if practicing martial arts, surrounded by cars and greenery in daylight.

9. These  two members keep the mood up by silly dancing to “Body to Body.”

People gathered in a meeting room with a wall covered in photographs, water bottles on the table, some individuals are pixelated for privacy.

10. This member sees music as a documentation of the phases of his life.

Person with pixelated face sitting in the back seat of a black car, seen through an open window, with trees and buildings reflected on the car's exterior in a sunny outdoor environment.

11. This member gifts someone a pair of pajamas.

A person wearing a hat sits indoors in a dimly lit environment near a reflective surface, with much of the image pixelated and details obscured.

12. This member considers himself to be an introvert now.

Two people wearing black gloves are styling or cutting a person’s hair in a salon-like setting, but the client’s head and upper body are heavily pixelated, obscuring their features.

13. This member feels he’s become “way more famous than I deserve.”

Two people playing tennis indoors; the player in the foreground is preparing to hit the ball while the opponent in the background waits to return the shot. The setting is a gym with a green wall and a net in the middle.

Look forward to watching these moments unfold (and seeing how you did!) by checking out BTS: THE RETURN, now streaming on Netflix.
