Take a peek into the dossier of the previously untitled series Mercenary, which takes place in the world of Extraction, one of Netflix’s most popular film franchises.

Helmed by showrunner, writer, and executive producer Glen Mazzara (The Shield, The Walking Dead), the action-packed series stars Omar Sy (Lupin, The Intouchables) as a soldier for hire who embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue hostages in Libya. Trapped between warring factions and ruthless killers, he must navigate life-or-death choices while confronting his own deep emotional wounds. The series explores the trauma, betrayal, and moral conflicts experienced by characters pushed to the edge.

Mercenary is an epic, global thriller being filmed in Ireland and Morocco; Louise Hooper (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, The Sandman) and Tim Southam (Foundation, ONE PIECE) each direct four of the eight episodes. “Mercenary is the biggest show I’ve ever done,” Mazzara tells Tudum. “It required an incredible amount of prep time. It was overwhelming to finally step on set and see the work of hundreds of people come together to bring this story to life. After our first take, I turned to … Hooper and said, ‘That’s it! That’s the show.’ It was a dream come true.”

Sy leads a stacked cast that includes Boyd Holbrook, Natalie Dormer, Waleed Zuaiter, Ed Speleers, Sacha Dhawan, Ross McCall, Pip Torrens, Sam Woolf, Michael Zananiri, Riyad Sliman, Muhannad Ben Amor, Aaron Heffernan, Jojo Macari, Theo Ogundipe, and Emma Appleton.

“Omar’s humanity and charm bring a warmth to a character trapped in impossible situations,” Mazarra says. “He moves effortlessly between the many worlds of our show while always remaining an outsider. He is, without a doubt, the beating heart of our show.”

This news follows the recent announcement that the Extraction universe will also expand to South Korea with the thriller spin-off film TYGO, starring Don Lee (The Roundup franchise, Marvel’s Eternals, Train to Busan), Lee Jin-uk (Squid Game, Sweet Home), and Lisa of BLACKPINK (The White Lotus).

AGBO, the production company founded by Anthony and Joe Russo, is executive producing Mercenary. “In both their TV work and feature films, Joe and Anthony work with large casts on big canvases,” says Mazzara. “Extraction stories are immersive and hard-driving. I jumped at the opportunity to use all that to tell a story I deeply care about with characters I love. In short, I stole from the best.”
