There’s staying in for the night, which is always a good plan — and then there’s being stuck in your house with no way out, which is the nightmare scenario a family faces in The Last House, coming to Netflix on Aug. 7.
Greta Lee and Wagner Moura star in the original sci-fi thriller directed by Louis Leterrier (Now You See Me, Lupin). “The Last House challenges the idea of a safe haven, turning a family home into a hostile environment where survival demands unity,” Leterrier tells Tudum. “This is an ordinary family’s worst nightmare, pushing them to their limits to protect each other and exposing the fragility of security — and the desperate fight to reclaim it.”
“I was so intrigued by the notion of what it might mean to wake up one day and be physically sealed in your home — and not even understand why,” Moura tells Tudum. “I think about how my own family would respond and handle something like that. I connected with the stakes of the film and the character on a deep level because of that.”

The Last House centers on a family who are sealed into their home with no way out. If that doesn’t sound nightmarish enough, their resources are running thin, and they must work together to survive not only a lack of essentials but also the mysterious, looming threat that is keeping them trapped inside.
“Growing up my favorite things to watch and read were survivalist stories with a twist,” Lee tells Tudum. “So I was immediately drawn to this story. I love the questions this movie asks about our world and how we choose to live in it. And I was excited about the possibility of asking these questions in a new and entertaining way.”
“The storyline will evolve in ways that the audience certainly will not expect, but that is what makes this film so interesting,” Moura says. “There are layers and twists that I can’t wait for everyone to see.”

Greta Lee (A House of Dynamite, Past Lives, Russian Doll) and Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent, Narcos, Narcos: Mexico) play Ann and Jason, the heads of the family of four.
“Ann is a rock,” Lee says about her character. “I’m so lucky to have had the chance to draw on all the women in my life who are the bedrock of their respective families. She has a selfless steadfast power that is unrelenting even in the most difficult times. She is the human embodiment of hysterical strength, the phenomenon where a normal person, in this case, an ordinary mother, can trigger an extraordinary surge of physical and emotional strength under extreme stress or danger. And it’s all in the name of love. That’s Ann’s superpower, just like so many other mothers I know in my own life.”
“Jason is a father but he is also a fierce protector of his wife and children,” Moura adds. “He knows he has to maintain that sense of calm and stability when everything is going sideways. He also has to look at himself and really figure out how he is going to get his family through this.”
Also starring are Riley Chung (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes), Emma Ho (The Baker), Alexander Noah Sosnowski (Section 8) and Gabriel Barbosa (May December).

The script comes from Matthew Robinson, whose previous work includes Love and Monsters, Dora and the Lost City of Gold, and The Invention of Lying. In addition to directing, Leterrier produced the project alongside Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and Kori Adelson for Chernin Entertainment, as well as Oly Obst for 3 Arts Entertainment. Thomas Benski, Cecile Gaget, Lars Sylvest, Thorsten Schumacher, Damian Anderson will serve as executive producers.

Cancel your plans and stay in — by choice — on Aug. 7 when The Last House begins streaming, only on Netflix.
“All I can say is - you are definitely in for a surprise,” Lee teases. “And I can’t wait for you all to see it.”
