Small-town life is a double-edged sword: On one hand, there’s a beautiful sense of community and closeness — a built-in group of people to help you through hard times. On the other hand, everybody is in your business, always. In Sweet Magnolias — Netflix’s drama about lifelong South Carolina best friends Maddie, Helen and Dana Sue juggling romantic relationships, family and careers — the positives definitely outweigh the negatives. But you’re probably going to need a refresher on the tangled web of South Carolina drama before you head back to Serenity for Season 3.

Sweet Magnolias Season 1 Recap

The first season introduces us to three lifelong best friends from the tight-knit town of Serenity, South Carolina, who call themselves the “Sweet Magnolias.” There’s newly divorced mom of three Maddie, played by JoAnna Garcia Swisher; career-minded lawyer Helen, played by Broadway powerhouse Heather Headley; and chef extraordinaire Dana Sue, played by Brooke Elliott. When we first meet the women, Maddie is re-entering the workforce following her separation from high school sweetheart Bill (Chris Klein), whose mistress, Noreen (Jamie Lynn Spears), is pregnant. The besties, bolstered by each other’s support, team up to open a spa, which Maddie manages as Helen continues to practice law and Dana Sue runs her restaurant, Sullivan’s.

Maddie moves on with her older son’s ex-MLB player baseball coach, Cal (Justin Bruening). Dana Sue is trying to officially divorce her estranged husband, Ronnie (Brandon Quinn), while reconnecting with old fling and silent business partner, Micah (Marland Burke) — and growing close with hot farmer Jeremy (Chase Anderson). Helen wants children, so she decides to finally call it quits with her longtime on-and-off boyfriend Ryan (Michael Shenefelt) and grows close with Dana Sue’s sous chef, Erik (Dion Johnstone). By the end of the season, Noreen and Bill break up.

The younger generation, including Maddie and Bill’s baseball superstar oldest son, Ty (Logan Allen), and theater-loving middle son, Kyle (Carson Rowland), and Dana Sue’s photographer daughter, Annie (Anneliese Judge), have their own romantic woes. Kyle’s crushing on Annie, but Annie’s crushing on Ty, and the season ends in a dramatic post-prom car accident with Ty unconscious and a passenger in the seat beside him.

You’ll also want to remember Maddie and Bill’s youngest and only daughter, Katie (Bianca Berry Tarantino), and Isaac (Chris Medlin), an employee of Dana Sue’s who has come to Serenity to find his birth mother.

Sweet Magnolias Season 2 Recap

In the second season, we learn that Ty is safe (and so is his passenger, Annie’s boyfriend’s sister — told you the kids had their own drama!) but he’s torn his ACL, throwing off his future plans.

Helen learns she’s pregnant but tragically miscarries, and must decide whether she wants to get back together with her ex or pursue a real relationship with Erik. Dana Sue and her ex officially reconcile — they’re getting back together! — while Maddie and Cal see a rift in their relationship once his past anger issues come back into play. (In fact, he gets fired, and later arrested!) Isaac locates his birth mother and finds out the identity of his birth father: Bill! Speaking of Bill, he and Noreen welcome a baby girl.

At the end of the season, a mysterious woman from the Magnolias’ past arrives in town to shake things up. But who is she? Find out when Season 3 debuts.
