“How did we scam them into doing this twice?!”
Outer Banks star Madison Bailey might still be in shock that the Pogues — and thousands of their biggest fans — were back on the ground for Poguelandia this year, but one event was never going to be enough to contain this fandom. So for Season 4, Netflix took over Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar on Saturday, Nov. 2 for the second-ever Poguelandia: An Outer Banks Experience. “Long may it run,” said Outer Banks creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke.
To catch the Pogues’ quintessential P4L vibes for a day, with the help of the Outer Banks cast and live musical performances from artists Chase B, Remi Wolf, GloRilla, and Jungle, fans came from across the world. GloRilla was definitely feeling the love after her set. “That was super lit!” she told Tudum backstage.
DJ Chase B kicked off the afternoon’s music performances with Tame Impala’s “The Less I Know the Better.” And, before he went onstage, he told Tudum how dope it was to see how excited the fans were to be there. “This is my first time being part of [an event] for a TV series that has this big of a fan base,” said Chase B. “Coming into that world where people live and die by these characters, you gotta let them know that they’re appreciated. You know what I’m saying?”
Netflix has become a natural platform for the world’s biggest music artists to connect with fans, because the artists are fans themselves. “Obviously, Netflix is the GOAT when it comes to streaming, so it’s cool to be really involved with it,” said Chase B, who himself is eagerly awaiting the release of YOU Season 5. “Joe’s a menace. You gotta watch out for Joe.”
Just last month on Oct. 29, Olivia Rodrigo dropped an inside look at her GUTS World Tour with a concert special, and, just in time for the holidays on Dec. 6, Sabrina Carpenter will celebrate A Nonsense Christmas with a live-stream variety music show. In between those specials, the Outer Banks cast took some of their own favorite artists straight to their fans. “I mean, the fact that we keep getting to do this and to have not just the platform of the show, but to see people come out in person is so badass,” said Chase Stokes, who just finished up the Pogue Tour, visiting even more fans in places like Brazil, Seattle, and Miami.
And this year’s Poguelandia lineup really was a group of performers that you’d find on the cast’s playlists. “We always throw out suggestions of who we want to see,” said Jonathan Daviss. “The Netflix team figures out who makes sense and who wants to do it, and they just try to put together a great lineup, and they did that for sure!”
Performing at the Barker Hangar was somewhat of a homecoming for Remi Wolf, who was especially excited to perform her song “Toro” for fans. The last time she performed at the venue was “when I was 17, auditioning for American Idol. So it’s very strange,” she said. “Feels good to be back.” Rudy Pankow, who introduced her onstage along with Stokes and Daviss, heard her warming up and was blown away. “She’s going to bring it down,” he said earlier in the afternoon.
Wolf, whose hit “Photo ID” is a top play for Stokes and was the closer of her set, was also recently at the premiere of the Olivia Rodrigo concert doc. While she’s in the midst of her tour for her Big Ideas album now, she was an opener for a portion of Rodrigo’s tour. “Netflix is an evergreen presence in our [lives],” says Wolf, who’s a big fan of watching series like Blown Away and Chef’s Table in her downtime. “And I watch it all the time. So happy to be a part [of the Netflix family] and happy to be here.”
Carlacia “Lacey” Grant believes she manifested GloRilla’s presence on the lineup. When the cast was doing the press tour for Outer Banks Season 4, Grant would listen to her confidence playlist to hype herself up for the day. “I was literally playing her, and I was like, ‘Dang, I want to see GloRilla this year,’ because ‘Yeah Glo!’ is my turn-up song,” she said. Then when she saw the lineup, she said: “I am a master manifester!” Grant and GloRilla actually met once before Poguelandia, at the Tommy Hilfiger show at New York Fashion Week, which she mentions in her song “Wanna Be” with Megan Thee Stallion.
Bailey has seen GloRilla perform at least three times. When she first saw her on the lineup, “I was freaking out!” she said. During GloRilla’s set, Grant, Bailey, and Daviss raced down to the pit in front of the stage to dance and sing along to every word. And GloRilla noticed, vibing with them and pointing down at them during the show. “I love them!” she said. “I’m super grateful. It felt good knowing that I got fans that love me.” Fans can also catch GloRilla on the next season of Rhythm + Flow, which was her first experience working on a TV show. “I love Netflix. I hope I can do more with them,” she said.
Like the Pogues, all the artists performing at Poguelandia value their ride or dies more than anything. A lot of the people in Wolf’s band have been with her since the start of her career. “Keep the real ones around,” she said. Most of Chase B’s friends are people he’s known for probably 10 or 12 years, and he’s still in contact with a lot of people from middle school. “I take it very seriously, actually, to know who you’re around and really have that camaraderie.”
GloRilla’s dancers, like the ones in her “F.N.F.” music video, are still with her now. “Loyalty is a big part of my life,” she said. Jungle’s band members have known each other since they were 9 years old, just like John B and JJ have been best friends since third grade in Outer Banks. Pankow was ready to be “grooving the entire time” to their song “Casio,” as was Drew Starkey. “I listened to that song when we were shooting the first season all the time,” he said. “I think ‘Casio’ is the shit.” He also thinks Jungle has the best music videos. “The dancing? It’s art. It’s incredible.”
During Jungle’s set, Starkey and his on-screen sister Madelyn Cline were at the front of the VIP section to hear Jungle’s hits like “Candle Flame” and “Back on 74.” Cline has been listening to Jungle for seven years, after one of her best friends played her their song “Time.” Some important Outer Banks trivia: “Time” was featured in the series’ first-ever trailer for Season 1. “It was one of my favorite songs forever, and then it was in the Season 1 trailer,” she said. “So for them to be here is so exciting.”
And in a full-circle moment to cap off the day, the cast took to the stage to introduce the brand-new Outer Banks Season 4, Part 2 trailer, which features another Jungle song, “Us Against the World.”
