Long ago in feudal Japan, ninjas (or shinobi) were masterful mercenaries hired by warlords to lead dangerous espionage missions to catch the baddies. But now it’s 2024, and ninjas… don’t really exist — except in House of Ninjas, the new spy thriller from writer-director Dave Boyle (Man from Reno) starring Kento Kaku, Yosuke Eguchi, and Tae Kimura. The series imagines a world in which ninja clans are alive and well — except they’re (mostly) retired. So when an evil clan threatens Japan, a family of former ninjas covertly comes out of retirement to foil the plot… and kick ass and take names.

Kento Kaku as Haru Tawara (center) in House of Ninjas

Everyone in the Tawara family is a bit… bored. Haru (Kaku) stocks vending machines and stokes his crush on a woman he doesn’t even know. His mom, Yoko (Kimura), is bored of domesticity and shoplifts to keep things interesting. His dad, Soichi (Eguchi), is tormented by the loss of Haru’s older brother, Gaku (Kora), and bides his time running a sake business. Nagi (Makita), Haru’s sister, skips class to go on secret missions she hides from her family. And then there’s the unassuming Riku (Banka), Haru’s little brother, and Taki (Miyamoto), Haru’s grandmother, who helps around the house.
Soichi wants Haru to one day take over the family business — sake brewing — but Haru just isn’t interested. When the family lost Gaku, everything changed... Back then, they were all ninjas, working together to serve justice. Now they’ve given it up. That is, until — one by one — the Tawara clan is pulled back in.
No, it’s an original series based on a story by co-executive producer Kaku (who plays Haru), Yoshiaki Murao (Trillion Game, Dearest), and Takafumi Imai (Kichijoji Losers, Sleepeeer Hit!).
