For two seasons, the question of Who Killed Sara? has been haunting fans of Netflix’s soapy Mexican thriller. More than once, the series has seemed close to solving its central mystery, only to pull the rug out from under viewers. But this season, the answers are finally coming. The show’s final episodes hit Netflix on May 18, and we’ve got all the answers to your questions — except the big one. Spoiler alert for Seasons 1 and 2 ahead!

What is Who Killed Sara? about?

Well, it’s all in the title. After his sister Sara is killed in a tragic parasailing accident, our protagonist Alex is betrayed by his friends, the powerful Lazcano family, and wrongly imprisoned for Sara’s murder. When Alex emerges from prison 18 years later, he’s ready to take his revenge on the Lazcanos and learn who really killed his sister — but the answers are more complicated than they might initially seem.

Who is in the cast of Who Killed Sara?

The sprawling cast includes Manolo Cardona as Alex (Sara’s wrongly jailed brother), Alejandro Nones as Rodolfo (Alex’s frenemy and Sara’s ex-boyfriend), Carolina Miranda as Elisa (Alex’s sometimes lover and Rodolfo’s sister) and Ximena Lamadrid as Sara. Under close suspicion is Rodolfo and Elisa’s father, César (Ginés García Millán), a multibillionaire who was having an affair with Sara when she was killed (she was also pregnant with his baby). Yes, you’ll probably need a family tree to keep track.

Is Who Killed Sara? based on a true story?

No. The outlandish plot twists of Who Killed Sara? are purely fictional. But creator José Ignacio Valenzuela did draw from his own experiences for certain plotlines: Chema and Lorenzo’s struggle to become parents as a gay couple was inspired by his own difficulties as a gay man growing up in Chile.

Do I need to watch the first two seasons of Who Killed Sara? to understand the new season?

Probably. The show takes enough crazy turns that it would be difficult to keep up without the added background of the first two seasons. Besides, you’d be missing out on quite a bit of drama. Why not catch up and come back?

So... who killed Sara?

Nice try. You’ll have to watch to get that answer.
