You can’t have a whodunnit without a colorful cast of suspects, and Who Killed Sara? has that in spades. In Season 3 of the already popular Mexican thriller series, we’re re-introduced to Alex Guzmán as he tries to uncover the mysterious circumstances that landed him in prison.
From the powerful members of the Lazcano family to the bereaved community trying to take them down, there are quite a few names and faces to keep track of this season. But don’t worry: We’re here to help (and to refresh your memory) with a cast guide that may (or may not) bring us closer to solving the show’s central mystery.

Although she dies in the very first episode of Season 1, Sara pops up consistently in flashbacks that help flesh out the events leading up to her murder. These flashbacks add up to a sort of “rhyming” structure with the events in the present day; in the same episode that Sara learns she’s pregnant with César’s baby, his new paramour Sofia learns the same in the present. It’s an effective way of making the character feel present in the show without her actually being alive.
As the show progresses, we learn more about Sara, including the fact that she suffered from schizophrenic sociopathy, for which her doctor prescribed electroshock therapy — and, if the last episode of Season 2 is anything to go on, he may have also prescribed a fall from a great height while parasailing. Who Killed Sara? is Ximena Lamadrid’s first major role, although you can also spot her in Sofia Coppola’s On the Rocks.

Sara’s brother, Alex, played by Manolo Cardona, is the bitter avenging angel of Who Killed Sara? When the show begins, he’s been wrongly imprisoned for 18 years for her murder. Upon his release, he begins plotting his revenge by tracking down the Lazcano family and, ultimately, seeking out Sara’s real killer. He also gets wrapped up in a sordid love affair with Elisa Lazcano. By Season 3, Alex has learned more than he bargained for about his sister’s past. Before taking on the mystery of who killed Sara, Cardona appeared on television shows like Rubirosa and Narcos.

The youngest child of César and Mariana, Elisa Lazcano is a bit of a turncoat. She becomes entangled with Alex’s mission of revenge and helps him discover her family’s dark secrets. In Season 2, Elisa is caught in an explosion meant for her father and spends much of the season recovering, only to burn down the Lazcano casino in the climactic final episode. We’ll have to wait and see how she’ll resolve the conflict between her morals and her family. Elisa is played by Carolina Miranda, who fans may recognize from Claramente and La mujer del diablo.

Like Elisa, Chema has broken with his criminal heritage and gone down a different path. But it hasn’t been easy: Last season saw Chema lose his partner Lorenzo and his surrogate Clara, who was carrying his child. At the end of the season, Chema turns himself over to the police and confesses to two murders, one of which he isn’t even guilty of. Siller broke through on the hit telenovela Rebelde, but perhaps his best-known role was playing the lead on Al Diablo con los Guapos.

Rodolfo (Alejandro Nones) is the initial prime suspect on Who Killed Sara? He was Sara’s boyfriend and, intoxicated at the time, sped up the boat while she was parasailing, which led to her “accident.” Rodolfo’s father César covered up his son’s mistake and tricked Alex into incriminating himself, setting off the main thrust of the show’s narrative. In the present day, Rodolfo has another estranged partner, Sofia, who also had an affair with his father. Weird that it happened twice! Nones can also be seen on shows like La Piloto and Amar a muerte.

Millán plays César, who in a way serves as the show’s “big bad.” Did he kill Sara? Probably not, but he did get Alex jailed for 18 years and serves as the head of a ruthless criminal organization. By the end of Season 2, he has faked his own death and escaped to a remote island. Season 3 will presumably see him face some kind of reckoning — if he can be found. You may recognize Millán from Libertad and Isabel.

César’s wife and the mother of Rodolfo, Elisa and Chema, Mariana is a remorseless matriarch who plotted to kill Sara when she learned the young woman was carrying her husband’s child. At the end of Season 1, it seemed that Mariana had ordered her adopted son Elroy (Héctor Jiménez) to cut Sara’s straps on the boat, but it became clear later that he disobeyed her orders. Mariana is played by Claudia Ramirez, best known for De la calle and Sexo y otros secretos. (Fun fact: Her acting debut was an uncredited appearance in David Lynch’s original Dune adaptation).

Singer and actress Litzy plays Marifer, Sara’s best friend and Alex’s ex-lover. Of course, as the show progresses, we learn quite a bit more about Marifer. Namely, that she is the mysterious “Diana the Huntress,” who has been helping Alex take down the Lazcanos, and that she and Sara share the same father (who is not Alex’s father; are you taking notes?). At the end of Season 2, we reached the ultimate revelation — that it was Marifer, after a furious argument with Sara, who cut the straps and allowed Sara to fall to her death. Or was it? The final moments of the episode suggest that Nicandro (Matías Novoa) may have been involved in a much larger conspiracy to bring about Sara’s death. As for Marifer, she seems to have been crushed by a falling piece of the Lazcano casino — emphasis on seems to. Litzy started her career as a member of the Mexican singing group Jeans; she’s come a long way.
