Black Rabbit is a family business — for better and for worse.
The new series from creators Zach Baylin and Kate Susman follows Jake Friedken (Jude Law), the up-and-coming restaurateur behind Black Rabbit, a shining New York City hotspot. He started the eatery with his brother Vince (Jason Bateman), but the troubled Vince has been off the grid for years now. When he returns to New York, he quickly drags Jake down a whirlpool of deceit into the city’s criminal underworld, jeopardizing Black Rabbit and everything else Jake has built.
“Kate and I were both interested in the idea of a restaurant being this epicenter of a city and a meeting place for all different kinds of people and a second home to others,” Baylin tells Tudum. “We started narrowing down who these characters were and that the show would be about two brothers, Jake and Vince.”
Against the backdrop of the brothers, we meet a variety of players, from Black Rabbit’s staff to mobsters to wealthy investors with problems of their own. “We feel so lucky with the cast we got,” Susman tells Tudum. “Everyone is so good and incredibly invested in their roles. On the page, all these characters were one thing, but were made completely three-dimensional and something totally different by the actors.”

At the beginning of Black Rabbit, Jake has it all together. Business is booming, and he’s even thinking about expanding. It’s a far cry from his wild younger years — until Vince returns and things quickly implode.
“When you meet Jake, he has sort of turned his life around,” Law tells Tudum. “The restaurant has become highly successful. He’s put aside his juvenile behavior and really taken the reins of the place and made it a success, and made himself a success — or so it seems.” What happens next is anyone’s guess.
Law was Oscar nominated for his captivating turns in The Talented Mr. Ripley and Cold Mountain. He’s appeared in films including The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Nest, and Spy and in series such as The Young Pope and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. Law is one of Black Rabbit’s executive producers.

At the beginning of Black Rabbit, Vince has none of it together. The former addict is struggling to make ends meet by hook or by crook, finally leading him back to his brother’s front door. Old habits die hard.
“He makes a bunch of mistakes and is risky to have around, but he’s a well-meaning guy,” Bateman tells Tudum. “He’s a problem, but he’s super lovable because he’s just not that bright. And you have empathy for a guy who you can see is trying to make the right decision, but just can’t get out of his own way.”
Bateman was nominated for multiple Primetime Emmys for his turns in beloved series Arrested Development and Ozark; in 2019, he won for directing an episode of Ozark. He’s starred in films including Air, Juno, and Bad Words (which he also directed). Bateman is one of Black Rabbit’s executive producers.

Estelle is the interior designer for Black Rabbit and the girlfriend of investor Wes (Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù). In the beginning of the series, Jake also offers her a role designing a potential new restaurant.
“[Cleopatra] surprised us with that character,” Susman says. “The scenes between her and Jude were so interesting and so layered that every scene we shot with them gave us other ideas for how we wanted to shape and change things.”
Coleman has starred in limited series Dopesick and Clipped, as well as cult sitcom The Last Man on Earth.

Roxie is the star head chef at Black Rabbit, but she has some of her own ideas about the way the business should be run.
“Amaka was so fun to work with,” Susman says. “She was in the very first scene we did and set the tone for everything. She was a delight to work with. She brought so much to Roxie, and the journey she took the character on unfolded in ways that we couldn’t have predicted when we wrote it.”
Okafor has appeared in television series including The Responder and Bodies. She’s also an accomplished voice actor, lending her talents to audio dramas including The Sandman and Doctor Who.

Musician and Black Rabbit investor Wes is a close friend of Jake’s. He’s also a fixture of Black Rabbit’s social scene.
“We knew Wes was going to be very complicated to cast because we needed someone who could be a presence that we believed immediately was a superstar,” Baylin tells Tudum. “And Ṣọpẹ́, from the moment he inhabited Wes — all those fears were alleviated. He’s so talented and actually incredibly musical himself. He brought a level of naturalism to a character that needed to be big; he really grounded him.”
Dìrísù has appeared in the series Gangs of London and Slow Horses and films including The Gorge and Mr. Malcolm’s List. He’ll next star in All the Sinners Bleed, based on S.A. Cosby’s bestselling 2023 novel.

Anna is a Black Rabbit bartender who finds herself on the outs with Jake.
Lee is an actor and model who has appeared in such films as Mad Max: Fury Road, Old, The Neon Demon, and Office Christmas Party.

Tony is a Black Rabbit kitchen employee who works closely with Roxie.
De Jesús is a film and theater actor who’s been nominated for multiple Tony awards for his work in In the Heights, La Cage aux Folles, and The Boys in the Band. He reprised his Boys in the Band role for the 2020 film and appeared in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s film adaptation of tick… tick… BOOM!

Mancuso is a New York City kingpin with quite a bit of leverage over Vince — namely, a substantial debt he’s owed.
Deaf actor Kotsur contributed a great deal to the conception of the character. “We met Troy at an event when he was promoting CODA and just fell in love with him,” Baylin says. “We started asking him about what he wanted to do and how we could work with him. And he told us he really wanted to play a bad guy. So when we started to put together this role, we wrote it specifically for him.”
For his turn in CODA, Kotsur became the first deaf actor to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He’s also appeared in television series including The Mandalorian, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Foundation.

Junior is Mancuso’s screwup heir and one of the two henchmen tasked with tracking down Vince.
Weber has appeared in The Blacklist and Law & Order.

Babbitt is another of Mancuso’s goons and a fixture by Junior’s side.
Coy has appeared in series like Lawmen: Bass Reeves, Station 19, and The Deuce.

Gen is Vince’s estranged daughter, who’s shocked when her unreliable father crashes back into her life.
Young can be seen in films such as Assassination Nation and Shirley and series including The Stand and The Staircase.

Val is Jake’s ex-wife and the mother of his son Hunter.
Dominczyk stole scenes as Waystar Royco PR head Karolina in Succession. She’s also appeared in films like The Lost Daughter, Priscilla, and The Immigrant.

Hunter is Jake and Val’s son.
Newbie Cash has appeared in films like You Gotta Believe and shows like Blue Bloods.
