Lee Sung Jin: These are two scenes from the very, very first draft of the script that you two never saw because it was back when Ashley and Austin lived next door to Josh and Lindsay. After Ashley and Austin have witnessed the horrible inciting incident, the fight, but they rush into their home. All right. [reads script] Ashley and Austin rush in and put Albert down, their dog.
Charles Melton (as Austin): No, no, no, no, no. We should go inside for our own safety.
Lee Sung Jin: "I swear to ***** Christ, I'll blow this whole thing up and bring you down with me." That's the fight that's going on inside. And then ruff ruff, a bark from behind, fight stops. Josh and Lindsay turn to see Albert, their dog. They turn back just as Josh turns towards them.
Cailee Spaeny (as Ashley): *****.
Lee Sung Jin: Interior, the Davis home. Ashley and Austin rush in and put Albert down.
Cailee Spaeny (as Ashley): Should we, like, call the cops?
Charles Melton (as Austin): Um, we have to live next to these people for a while.
Cailee Spaeny (as Ashley): We — we can leave an anonymous tip.
Charles Melton (as Austin): Babe… [chuckles nervously] Babe, he looked right at us.
Lee Sung Jin: The dog cries and scratches at the door. “Poor dog,” they sighed. They go outside their house.
Cailee Spaeny (as Ashley): Pee-pee outside, Albert.
Charles Melton (as Austin): Yeah, I don't think he's gonna go.
Lee Sung Jin: “Hey, how you doing? You guys just moved in, right?” This is Josh.
Charles Melton (as Austin): Uh, no.
Cailee Spaeny (as Ashley): Uh, not like just now, but earlier, yes.
Lee Sung Jin (as Josh): Nice, nice. I'm Josh. I live next door.
Cailee Spaeny (as Ashley): Nice to meet you. I'm Ashley. This is my husband, Austin.
Lee Sung Jin (as Josh): It's cold out, huh?
Cailee Spaeny (as Ashley): Sure is.
Lee Sung Jin (as Josh): Heater's working and everything?
Cailee Spaeny (as Ashley): Yeah, thank God.
Lee Sung Jin (as Josh): That's good, that's good. You know how it is. First week in a new home, you always find weird, weird little things.
Cailee Spaeny (as Ashley): Oh yeah? This is our first home.
Lee Sung Jin (as Josh): Congrats. Get ready for that, uh, property tax bill. Oof.
Cailee Spaeny (as Ashley): [awkward chuckling] OK.
Lee Sung Jin (as Josh): He's shy, huh?
Charles Melton (as Austin): It is cold out. We should go.
Lee Sung Jin (as Josh): But — but how — how are you doing?
Cailee Spaeny (as Ashley): I'm sorry?
Lee Sung Jin (as Josh): I mean, are you having a good time tonight? Everything good?
Cailee Spaeny (as Ashley): [chuckles awkwardly] Yeah, we're great. Everything's great.
Lee Sung Jin (as Josh): Good, okay, that's really good to hear. Uh, have a wonderful night then.
Charles Melton: I got a couple of notes. [Cailee laughs] I don't have…
Lee Sung Jin: I don't know, I thought that was pretty good. That was pretty good.
[whoosh effect]
Lee Sung Jin: I'll be the sheriff. So this is, uh, interior, the Jennings' home. Uh, front door, night. Uh, Josh and Lindsay greet Sheriff Steve, 50s.
Oscar Isaac (as Josh): Come on in, Steve, it's cold out.
Lee Sung Jin (as Steve): Uh, sorry to be bothering you like this.
Carey Mulligan (as Lindsay): Not a bother at all. Is everything okay?
Lee Sung Jin (as Steve): Uh, well, we got an anonymous call about a domestic violence incident at your address.
Oscar Isaac (as Josh): Really? That — that's crazy.
Carey Mulligan (as Lindsay): I mean, we had a little argument, but… domestic violence?
[all laughing awkwardly]
Lee Sung Jin (as Steve): Yeah, yeah, I thought it was odd as well. I did. Uh, the call mentioned there was a… there was a gun involved.
Oscar Isaac (as Josh): A gun? Uh, Lindsay would kill me if I brought a gun home.
Carey Mulligan (as Lindsay): You might actually get a domestic violence call then.
[all chuckling]
Oscar Isaac (as Josh): No, I mean, you can have a look around, Steve. There's no gun here.
Lee Sung Jin (as Steve): No, no, no, it's all right. I figured. Uh, probably a prank call from some teenagers in the neighborhood.
Carey Mulligan (as Lindsay): Kids today.
Oscar Isaac (as Josh): Yeah.
Lee Sung Jin (as Steve): Hey, uh, what's up with this welcome dinner next week? Does the new owner even speak English?
Oscar Isaac (as Josh): Uh, she doesn't, but she has a translator.
Lee Sung Jin (as Steve): Well, I hope she can translate this: I'm gonna need my jalapeño poppers.
[Oscar laughing]
Carey Mulligan (as Lindsay): Don't worry, Steve. Josh will make sure you still have all your faves on the menu.
Oscar Isaac (as Josh): Yeah, of course. Would not change it up on our best member.
Lee Sung Jin (as Steve): All right, you two take care now.
Oscar Isaac (as Josh): All right.
Carey Mulligan (as Lindsay): All right.
[all laughing]
