Based on Kuniko Mukoda’s 1970s miniseries Like Asura, the Japanese domestic drama Asura follows a group of siblings as they put together the pieces after their father’s affair. Written and directed by Oscar nominee and Palme d’Or winner Hirokazu Kore-eda (Shoplifters), the period drama set in 1979 Tokyo delves into the family dynamics of four sisters — played by Rie Miyazawa, Machiko Ono, Yu Aoi, and Suzu Hirose — as they become enmeshed in interpersonal drama.
