Brace yourself for the final chapter of Joe Goldberg’s bloody tale — because there’s a lot more than just this sneak peek of You Season 5 to watch. You can now catch all 10 episodes of the thriller’s final season only on Netflix.

“Every season they manage to find new space to make it interesting and relevant,” Penn Badgley (he/him) tells Tudum on the New York set. “And this season, I think somehow coming back to where it started allowed for it to just become grounded in the way that it needs to also have this kind of spectacular finish.”

Co-showrunners and executive producers Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo add, “It’s so rare that you’re afforded the opportunity to do five seasons of a show, let alone complete the story — while also bringing your character and the production back to where it all began. It was truly a unicorn experience and an absolute career highlight for both of us.”

Below, check out photos from the new season and keep on reading to learn everything you need to know about Joe’s swan song.

What is You Season 5 about?

In the epic fifth and final season, Joe Goldberg (Badgley) returns to New York to enjoy his happily ever after… until his perfect life is threatened by the ghosts of his past and his own dark desires.

“We always said that we would stop after five and [that], in a perfect world, we would bring Joe back home to New York,” says Foley. “We loved the idea of things coming full circle for him. We’re excited by the fact that Joe came home as such a different person than [who] we saw in Season 1. At the core of our final story for Joe is this dichotomy of the old and the new.”

The new season picks up three years after Joe and Kate (Charlotte Ritchie, she/her) left London for New York City. Kate is now CEO of the Lockwood Corporation, Joe is her loyal husband who has been dubbed Prince Charming by the adoring public, and they’re both following through on their pact to help each other do good. But as the teaser hints, and longtime followers of the misadventures of Joe Goldberg can guess, reconciling who Joe has been with who he wants to be is an ongoing project.

“One of the most fun things about this season is the Prince Charming aspect, that Joe is actually famous,” says Lo. “All the other seasons, he’s been really under the radar. That’s how he is able to move from season to season and place to place, because of his anonymity. Now that he is well known in New York, social media is on him. That’s something fun for us to explore.”

As the season unfolds, Joe will not only cross paths with a young woman, played by Madeline Brewer, who makes him reconsider his affluent life, but will also contend with his wife Kate’s siblings. You can read more about them below.

Can I get a recap of what happened throughout the seasons of You

Yes. Take a trip down memory lane with this epic look at the show’s entire run.

What else should I know about You Season 5?

While Penn Badgley’s antihero never could’ve predicted where his quest for true love would take him, the same can’t be said for the show’s creative team, because they “always conceived it as a five-season journey,” executive producers Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter said in a statement in March.

Executive producer Sera Gamble, who created You with Berlanti, stepped down as showrunner for Season 5 to focus on developing other projects. In her stead, Foley, who’s been with the series since Season 1, and Lo, who joined in Season 2, took over showrunning duties.

“As I step back from day-to-day showrunning to focus on new projects, I’m immensely grateful to co-creator and all-around genius Greg Berlanti, Caroline Kepnes, my friends at Berlanti Productions and Alloy Entertainment, and our steadfast partners at Warner Bros and Netflix,” said Gamble. “Making the show alongside our writers, producers, directors, cast, and crew has been an honor and ridiculously fun. And I feel lucky to have worked with an artist as gifted and thoughtful as Penn Badgely. I’m proud of what we’ve all accomplished and feel privileged to pass the torch. I’m excited to watch and support the You team as they bring Joe Goldberg’s journey to its delightfully twisted conclusion.”

In their statement, Berlanti and Schechter thanked Gamble for stewarding the show and said they look forward to working with Foley and Lo.

“We are so incredibly grateful to Netflix and Sera and everyone that has been a part of this show from the beginning. Sera is the most brilliant writer and partner and she will remain a key part of the You family as an executive producer. We intend to bring her every idea we can from our company for years to come,” said Berlanti and Schechter. “We are excited to continue our relationship with Mike and Justin as they take over the reins as co-showrunners and prepare to bring Joe Goldberg home.”

Foley and Lo added, “Working with Greg and Sera on You has been a highlight of our careers and we’re incredibly honored to be entrusted with the final chapter of Joe Goldberg’s story.”

You’s audience grew over the course of its first three seasons, with each one adding more viewing hours through 28 days than the one before it. So far, the fourth season has spent five weeks on the Global Top 10 English TV list and reached the Top 10 in 90 countries.

“We’re proud to see how You has captivated audiences around the world, becoming an instant sensation on Netflix with a resounding cultural impact that has grown season over season,” said Peter Friedlander, vice president of scripted series, Netflix, US and Canada. “We’re excited — and a bit terrified — to see how it all ends for Joe Goldberg, but one thing is for sure: You are in for an unforgettable ending.”
