If the words “Zima,” “Pogs” and “Beanie Babies” mean nothing to you, then you might’ve been confused by some of the references in That ’90s Show. It’s also probably because you were born in a year that starts with 20-, like the entire new cast of the sitcom. But that doesn’t mean the series isn’t relatable for anyone watching.
“Even though I was never alive in the ’70s or the ’90s when [That ’70s Show] was being filmed,” says Callie Haverda, “I could relate to each of the characters.”

As Leia Forman, Haverda anchors the sitcom about a group of friends spending their summer in Point Place, Wisconsin in 1995. Haverda, 15, was born in 2007, 12 years after the series takes place; the oldest of That ’90s Show’s cast, 18-year-old Mace Coronel (who plays Jay), was still nine years away from being born when the show takes place (he was born in 2004).
To make sure you get the most out of That ’90s Show, here are a few more insights into the ’90s references for anyone who was born in this millennium.
In 1995, the year that gave us Colin Firth in a clingy white shirt in Pride and Prejudice, bloated blockbuster Waterworld and best frenemies Buzz Lightyear and Woody in Toy Story.
Before he became a prolific director with more than15 feature films to his name, Kevin Smith was just a guy from New Jersey who financed his first film, Clerks, on his credit cards. The black-and-white comedy followed a day in the life of two clerks at a New Jersey convenience store, and inspired multiple sequels, TV shows and comic books. It came out on VHS in May of 1995 — making it a hot commodity during the summer Leia spends with her grandparents. A VHS, children, is how we had to watch movies before streaming.

Zima is a clear malt beverage that very quickly became the must-drink libation of the mid-’90s, then just as quickly flopped hard and ceased production. However, its invention paved the way for Mike’s Hard Lemonade, Smirnoff Ice and other similar beverages available at your local liquor store.
Green starred in Beverly Hills, 90210, the series that brought teen dramas to prominence and followed a group of rich high schoolers in Beverly Hills’ now-iconic zip code. He also starred as himself and his famous character in Leia’s fantasy sequences about the soap in That ’90s Show.
Great question. The 1993 kids’ film about a boy on a quest to free a beloved killer whale from an aquarium is a classic for a reason, although she thought maybe it was a little too immature for her new, cool friends.
