‘Wendell & Wild’ Creep into Our World in This New Trailer

The new Henry Selick flick is coming this October.

    Sept. 6, 2022

Everyone has their demons — but a young orphan named Kat is facing a particularly chilling pair of them. Of course, these demons come in the form of the Wendell and Wild: two comically abstract, bright purple creations with the voices of Keegan-Michael Key and producer Jordan Peele.

Henry Selick’s new stop-motion joint Wendell & Wild tells the story of demonic brothers who escape from a hellish prison and into the real world with Kat’s help. Once there, they embark on a journey to enrich themselves… but they just might wind up helping Kat find peace first. The trailer gives us a glimpse of Kat’s dreamy walk through her traumatic past, as well as her first meeting with Wendell and Wild and plenty of the chaos they unleash in the world of the living.

In the new trailer for the film, Kat (Lyric Ross) and Sister Helley (Angela Bassett) embark on a green-tinged vision quest, with Kat’s shadow puppet–inspired memories invading her mind. Enter the demons: When Kat summons Wendell and Wild to the Land of the Living, her world is turned upside down — literally. And they’re not even the most threatening ghouls in town: The trailer ends with the massive horns of Buffalo Belzer (Ving Rhames) bursting out of the ground. It’s going to take a colorful crew of compatriots to solve this one.

Like Selick’s previous films The Nightmare Before Christmas and CoralineWendell & Wild is a fully stop-motion animated visual feast, full of ghouls and creepy-crawlies that move with the handmade joy of the medium. “It's almost like the relationship you have with your toys when you're little. You believe they're real and alive, and you imagine them being alive and having conversations,” Selick tells Tudum. “That's the thing about stop motion: Somehow that thing exists.”

Over the course of the film, Wendell, Wild and Kat have to learn to embrace the flaws that bind them together — all while dealing with corrupt bureaucracy, warrior nuns and Kat’s own memories. And on top of that, the film’s non–Key & Peele voice cast includes Ross, Rhames, Bassett, James Hong and Sam Zelaya. How’s that for a pitch?

Wendell & Wild hits Netflix on Oct. 28, and select theaters on Oct. 21. Keep an eye out for these two tricksters.
