This time, however, they’ve come prepared with UV light-powered machinery to get the job done. Whether that will be enough to stop an enormous creature made of stone and earth remains to be seen.

What is Troll 2 about?

In Troll, a project to build a railway through the Dovre Mountains awakens a sleeping giant who’s been in captivity for a thousand years. With the massive creature destroying everything in its path, the government calls in paleontology professor Nora Tidemann (Ine Marie Wilmann). She, along with her father (Gard B. Eidsvold) and a ragtag band of assistants, attempt to figure out what is causing this mayhem and how to stop it before it reaches Oslo.

Troll 2 picks up with an all-new threat. When a dangerous new troll wakes up and goes on a rampage, our heroes Nora, political advisor Andreas Isaksen (Kim Falck), and former army captain — now a major — Kristoffer Holm (Mads Pettersen) are faced with their most perilous mission yet. The clock is running out as the monster’s path of destruction widens, and they must overcome impossible odds to save their homeland from falling into darkness.

Both films are based on Norwegian folklore, which is a significant aspect of the country’s cultural heritage, director Roar Uthaug says. Trolls “are a huge part of growing up in Norway. They’re in the fairy tales that parents tell their kids and in the lullabies they sing, so it’s always been part of my life.” Kim Falck, who plays Andreas, compares the popularity of these mythic beings to that of Santa Claus, and they’re a big reason why he was drawn to the Troll franchise. “Sometimes to me, there’s not enough magic,” he says. “To have hope and to dare to believe in something can be a challenge, but at times, it can be crucial to have some sort of belief in humanity and in the world.”

The intrinsic link between history and folklore in Norwegian culture is explored through a mystery our heroes must solve in order to save the day in Troll 2. “We touched slightly upon it in the first movie, so I really wanted to expand on that in the second. I always think it’s cool to follow characters when they’re doing an investigation,” says Uthaug. “It’s not just a pure monster movie. It’s [also] really a big adventure.” The director adds that the sequel also examines how — or even if — humans can coexist with nature when, as established in the original film, we can’t control it.

Who is the creative team behind Troll 2?

The sequel is helmed by the same creative team, including director Roar Uthaug, writer Espen Aukan, and producers Espen Horn and Kristian Strand Sinkerud from Motion Blur.

“I am beyond proud of how audiences around the globe connected with the first Troll film far beyond what we imagined,” Uthaug told Netflix of the first film, which appeared in the Top 10 in 93 countries, and shot to No. 1 in Norway, the US, and the UK. “With the sequel, we are aiming high — expanding the scope, deepening the story, and creating a troll-sized spectacle like you’ve never seen before. I cannot wait for fans to experience the adventure we have in store.”

Horn and Sinkerud added, “It’s always daunting to do a sequel, but we truly feel that this time, we’ve created an even better, bigger, funnier, and more adventurous film — if that’s even possible!”

Of the team, Falck says, “I feel really happy for Roar Uthaug, Espen Aukan, and the producers at Motion Blur. … They spent so much time creating something that was received so well, and now we’re here making a sequel. It’s nice to see, and it’s nice to be invited to participate.”

How did the team bring the trolls to life in Troll 2?

Take a behind-the-scenes look at how the visual effects team made these creatures feel so real by pressing play on the featurette above. Uthaug steps directly into the digital landscapes and shares firsthand insights on the creative process and the remarkable design work that sets these trolls apart from anything audiences have seen before. “We worked closely with [the] motion capture [team] and skilled animators on, first, the range of expressions that the trolls could have — to convey the emotions of the trolls in each moment — and then also [on] their walk cycles, to get the weight right. When he stomps down, the body reverberates,” Uthaug exclusively tells Tudum.

Who’s in the Troll 2 cast?

The cast for the new film includes:

  • Ine Marie Wilmann returning as Nora.
  • Kim Falck returning as Andreas.
  • Mads Sjøgård Pettersen returning as Captain Kris.
  • Sara Khorami as newcomer Marion.
  • Anne Krigsvoll as newcomer Esther Johanne Tiller.

“Diving into the Troll adventure was incredibly fun the first time around, and we were absolutely amazed by its global success,” Wilmann tells Netflix. “It is with great respect and excitement that I embarked on creating the sequel. I hope and believe that people will enjoy more of what they appreciated last time. We certainly had a fantastic time making Troll 2, and we are really looking forward to sharing it with the world.” Joining Wilmann and the other returning cast members are new additions Sara Khorami and Anne Krigsvoll. Uthaug says they bring “fresh life” to the ragtag crew fans are already so fond of. “It’s interesting to see the dynamics when you bring new characters into a group, so that was an important part of the movie.”

What happens in the Troll 2 ending?

Uthaug and Falck tell all about the tragic, shocking ending here.

Can I see a clip from Troll 2?
