In Georgian-era England, unmarried women weren't supposed to appear in public without a chaperone. Which means period romances like Persuasion, based on the Jane Austen novel, aren’t filled so much with steamy make-out sessions but rather lots and lots of longing stares and pining from afar.
Persuasion stars Dakota Johnson as Austen heroine Anne Elliot, who’s juggling a flirtation with her handsome cousin Mr. William Elliot (Henry Golding) and her long-lost first love, Captain Frederick Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis), to whom she was once set to marry. Her family convinced her to break the engagement for a more suitable match, but now that he’s a returned war hero, their swoon-worthy love is rekindled.
Below, we’ve compiled all of the crackling hot, chemistry-laden glances between Anne and William, Anne and Frederick and pretty much everyone else in the film, which is now streaming on Netflix.
