The glitziest and most glamorous sections of the new documentary Halftime give fans the sneak peek they’ve always wanted into the world of Jennifer Lopez, the larger-than-life entertainer and businesswoman. The red carpets! The award shows! The surprise appearance of former co-star/current fiancé Ben Affleck! But there’s also a deeply intimate dimension of Lopez that’s explored, as she allows cameras to capture her family life with children Emme and Max Muñiz.

Throughout the film, we see Lopez raising her “coconuts,” as she lovingly calls them, as a single mom. It’s clear just how much joy she finds in motherhood. In one particularly heartwarming scene, we see Emme as she happily arrives home as her mom is in the middle of an interview. Lopez glows as Emme makes her mom guess how many signatures she’s recently gotten for a petition. When Emme reveals she obtained 156 names, Lopez shouts with pride — she’s a Leo mom, after all.

The dramatic finale of Halftime — Lopez’ 2020 Super Bowl performance — is also a touching mother-daughter moment. Emme famously sang a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.” during the show alongside Lopez, who’s draped in a feathered Puerto Rican-flag cape. “It’s so much more powerful if Emme sings [it] as a little young Latina girl,” says Lopez. “Although it would seem scary for a lot of people, she doesn’t feel nervous because she’s next to me.”
