Seek Vengeance with the ‘Blue Eye Samurai’ Cast

“If we didn’t have Maya Erskine, there was no second choice for Mizu.”

    Oct. 12, 2023

When Blue Eye Samurai creators Amber Noizumi and Michael Green were casting the voice actors of their animated series, one thing was first and foremost in their minds — talent of Asian heritage should be prioritized.

Noizumi told Netflix that they wanted to cast authentically. “We wanted representation so that even our group actors who were just murmurs in the background [were] also Asian,” she said. “That was our top priority.”

Mizu, voiced by Maya Erskine, in ‘Blue Eye Samurai’ Season 2.

Blue Eye Samurai is set in 17th-century Edo Japan and follows Mizu (voiced by Maya Erskine), a mixed-race master of the sword who lives a life in disguise seeking to deliver revenge. “If we didn’t have Maya Erskine, there was no second choice for Mizu,” said Green.

Meet the Blue Eye Samurai and all the characters she encounters on her quest for vengeance below.

as Mizu
About the Character

Mizu is a fierce, determined mixed-race samurai on a revenge quest against the four white men who made her a “creature of shame.” She’s taken in by the Swordmaker and learns to forge then wield swords. She wears amber-tinted sunglasses to hide her blue eyes and disguises herself as a man.

Noizumi first fell in love with Erskine’s work through PEN15, as she “related so much to her feelings about growing up mixed-race Japanese in Southern California, which was my experience,” she said. “Sometimes I would watch her and knew that she felt my pain. She far exceeded our expectations as Mizu, and we hadn’t really seen her do anything this dramatic. But she really went above and beyond.”

Green praised how highly skilled, deeply trained, and serious an actor Erskine is — especially considering how much time she spent thinking about having a voice that masks your gender. “We all got to know her as a brilliant comedic actor from the show PEN15, and I think the world is about to get to know her as an action hero,” he said.
