What Comes Next for Heartstopper? Alice Oseman Discusses the Show’s Future

“We would love to tell the end of the story in TV form.”

Heartstopper creator Alice Oseman knows fans are hoping for more Charlie (Joe Locke) and Nick (Kit Connor) on their television following the Season 3 premiere on Oct. 3. Oseman feels the same way: as the writer of the original graphic novels, and executive producer and showrunner of the beloved YA show, they are  excited for what comes next, and eager to tell that story.

“In terms of the show, obviously there is more story in the books that we have yet to cover, and we would love to tell the end of the story in TV form,” they tell Tudum. Heartstopper Season 3 took inspiration from Volume 4 and Volume 5; there is a sixth and final novel on the way. Oseman confirms she is in talks with Netflix and Heartstopper’s production company, See-Saw Films, about what will come next for the television series.

“As much as I — and everyone else — want the final installment to come to the screen as soon as possible,” Oseman says, “there are a lot of moving parts to account for that make it hard to solidify anything. But we’re doing our best, and will let fans know as soon as we can.”

But, they explain, “there’s nothing that I can really share yet. I feel like viewers of the show hopefully know that I’m very open and honest online about the process and what’s going on with production. So of course, I will share anything when I’m able to — but that’s all there is at the moment.”

Right now, Oseman’s focus is on maintaining the magic of Heartstopper in page-turning form. They are “very much at the beginning” of creating Volume 6, which would inspire any upcoming Heartstopper TV content, meaning that neither book nor TV adaptation will “be out for quite a while yet.”

“I’m coming towards the end of the story now, which is a very bittersweet feeling,” they say. “I love Heartstopper so much, so I am very sad that it’s going to end, but I’m ready to tell the end of that story … I feel like it’s in the best circumstances. I can’t wait to show everyone what happens.”

Although Oseman finds it “quite scary” to imagine the culmination of Heartstopper through any medium, it’s also, well, heartening. “Our little gang of Heartstopper characters are going to all grow up and have to go out into the big wide world. It’s really fun to imagine where all of these characters are going to end up. I’m excited to take them on that journey in Volume 6.”

Until fans get more Heartstopper, the writer really wants them to luxuriate in the beautiful world she and her team built with the most recent season. “There’s so much to discover in Season 3 — so many different elements of the story to unpack and discuss and talk about with all your friends,” Oseman tells Tudum. “So I hope that people will be able to just sit in that and enjoy that for as long as they can.”

As Oseman points out, by the Season 3 finale, viewers will have experienced about a year and a half in the lives of Charlie, Nick, and their loved ones. “Fans have seen these characters go through so much. Their relationships have deepened, and so many of the characters have blossomed and discovered new things about themselves,” they say. “I hope that people will feel like they’ve been on such a huge journey with these characters … It’s a really heartwarming feeling.”
