“It’s so beautiful to get to celebrate this properly.”

On Monday, Aug. 5, The Umbrella Academy cast, creators, and devoted fans gathered at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood for the show’s Season 4 premiere and to say a bittersweet goodbye to the series.

Every time a cast member entered the patio of the historic theater and leaned over to take a selfie or sign a poster, uproarious squeals drowned out the traffic of Hollywood Boulevard. The Hargreeves siblings aren’t just characters on the show, they’re family.

Taking in the “eerie and beautiful” experience felt surreal for Aidan Gallagher, who’s played Five on the series since he was just 13 years old. “It was a beautiful chapter and an incredible privilege to have grown up as a person and as a dramatic actor within this context,” the now-20-year-old actor told Tudum during the event. “I got really lucky.”

The celebrations wouldn’t have been complete without Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, the creator and illustrator, respectively, of the Dark Horse graphic novels on which The Umbrella Academy is based. “The scale of something like this is so different from making a comic book,” said Bá, who flew in from Brazil for the premiere. “I can work with Gerard online and we talk a lot, but to come here and be part of the celebration, it’s a really special feeling.”

Way shared with Tudum how special it was to commemorate the world of The Umbrella Academy at the premiere. “I’m really proud of everybody’s hard work and how much they cared about the world,” he said. “My goal was always just [to] try to make a really great comic so they could have fun with it. I think they have. And I dig that.”

“To say goodbye to it is really heartbreaking, but I’m also grateful that we got this experience and grateful that we got to end it on our own terms,” said Justin H. Min (Ben), left, with Ritu Arya (Lila), right.

Emmy Raver-Lampman (who plays Allison) told Tudum that she was pregnant during the final season of filming. “It was 2017, I was 28 years old and got cast to play this superhero, crime-fighting woman who was also a mother,” she said. “I’m saying goodbye to pretending to be a mom, and I think it prepared me to be a mom. It’s just felt really weirdly full circle, the timing of all of it.”

Robert Sheehan, Millie Davis, and David Cross attend attend ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 4 premiere after-party at The Spotlight in Los Angeles.

Millie Davis, center, and David Cross (Sy Grossman), right, join The Umbrella Academy cast for Season 4. Davis, who plays Allison’s daughter Claire, views Raver-Lampman as her second mom. “I didn’t have my mom on set with me, so she was taking care of me the whole time,” she said. “And Rob [Sheehan, who plays Klaus, left] is basically an uncle to me now — he’s just amazing.”

Tom Hopper and Emmy Raver-Lampman attend ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 4 premiere after-party at The Spotlight in Los Angeles.

“It’s been a long old stint, seven years, four seasons,” said Tom Hopper (Luther), left, with Raver-Lampman, right. “People say that about different shows, but we really have become a group of siblings. We’ve been doing all this press together this week, and it really solidified it. When you’re out of the stress of doing the actual job, we really are like a family getting together at Christmas.”

Ritu Arya and Elliot Page attend ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 4 premiere after-party at The Spotlight in Los Angeles.

“It’s so beautiful to get to celebrate this properly, and I don’t want it to end,” Arya, left, told Tudum tearfully. “But everything has to end, so I’m in acceptance and gratitude.” Elliot Page, who plays Viktor, is on the right.

“It just means so much to be here with the group of people that I’ve spent the last many years with, getting to be a part of this wonderful show.”

David Castañeda (Diego) lives up to his adventurous character’s antics, getting a tattoo at the after-party. “They’re pulling out all the stops, so it’s nice to go out with a bang,” he said.

Robert Sheehan attends ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 4 premiere after-party at The Spotlight in Los Angeles.

Sheehan, whose character is prone to life-and-death scenarios more than the average Hargreeves, is trying to just enjoy the moment. “Maybe I’ll have a few drinks and get quite huggy about it later on, and a bit sort of teary, and a bit drooly,” he said. “Right now, I’m having an absolute whale of a time.”

At the end of the first season, Hopper and his wife, Laura Hopper, who plays Rachel Herschberger, had a baby, so his life has changed completely since working on the show. “Well, I say I had a child. My wife had a child. She did all the work!”

Victoria Sawal and Elliot Page attend ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 4 premiere after-party at The Spotlight in Los Angeles.

Victoria Sawal, left, is new to the cast for Season 4 but was a fan of the series. “It felt incredibly daunting but such an honor to join such a prolific cast of family, the dysfunctional family we love, and to see them behind the scenes,” she said. “They are everything that you think they are. They are wonderful. They are sweet, they are loving, and they welcomed me with open arms.”

“It just means so much to be here with the group of people that I’ve spent the last many years with, getting to be a part of this wonderful show,” said Page. “I really just am feeling so lucky and such gratitude that we got to have four seasons. I had the privilege of playing this incredible role and getting to connect with fans, and it’s really nice.”
