Warning: Spoilers for Seasons 1–3 ahead.

For a town so small it doesn’t even have a hair salon, Virgin River is a dramatic-as-hell place to live. Drug kingpins, murders and kidnappings are all common occurrences in this Northern California utopia. But somehow, that’s all part of the show’s charm. In case you need a refresher on why this is the case — and how, exactly, the Virgin River criminal element has weaseled its way into the daily lives of these small-town residents — we’ve rounded up all the information you’ll need heading into Season 4, which launches July 20.

Who’s who in Virgin River?

Much like any small town in America, everyone knows each other in Virgin River. And many of their relationships go back decades and even generations. Check out a deep dive here, but here’s a quick refresher on everyone you need to know:

Melinda “Mel” Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) — a nurse practitioner and midwife who moved to Virgin River from Los Angeles after some personal tragedies
Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson) — a local bar owner and former Marine, also the town’s de-facto therapist and jack-of-all-trades
Vernon “Doc” Mullins (Tim Matheson) — Virgin River’s town doctor and Mel’s new boss
Hope McCrea (Annette O’Toole)  the brash mayor of Virgin River; married to Doc
John “Preacher” Middleton (Colin Lawrence)  Jack’s Marine buddy and Uber-talented chef at Jack’s Bar
Brie Sheridan (Zibby Allen)  Jack’s lawyer sister; recently relocated to Virgin River
Dan Brady (Benjamin Hollingsworth) — Jack’s former Marine buddy; involved with Virgin River’s criminal underbelly but trying to get out; dating Brie
Mike Valenzuela (Marco Grazzini) — another Marine buddy currently working as a police detective
Joey Barnes (Jenny Cooper) — Mel’s sister from Los Angeles; doesn’t technically live in Virgin River but visits a lot
Charmaine Roberts (Lauren Hammersley) — Jack’s ex with whom he’s expecting twins
Ricky (Grayson Gurnsey) — Jack’s Bar busboy and aspiring Marine
Lizzie (Sarah Dugdale)  teen troublemaker sent to live with her aunt in Virgin River
Paige (Lexa Doig) — owner of the bakery truck; fled town after her abusive husband found her
Connie (Nicola Cavendish) — Lizzie’s aunt, Hope’s friend and the bakery truck’s new operator
Muriel (Teryl Rothery) — Hope’s frenemy who shares a romantic past with Doc
Lilly (Lynda Boyd)  Hope’s friend who recently died from cancer
Tara (Stacey Farber)  Lilly’s daughter
Mark Monroe (Daniel Gillies) — Mel’s deceased husband
Calvin (David Cubitt) — menacing leader of the illegal pot farm; blackmailing Brady to do his bidding

Is Virgin River based on a book?

Indeed — the drama is inspired by Robyn Carr’s bestselling book series, which began in 2007 and currently has 21 installments.

What happened in Season 1 of Virgin River

Listen, as you already know, there’s a lot of drama in this tiny town. But we’ll do our best to give you just the essentials. Mel arrives in Virgin River looking for a change of pace following the death of her husband and a stillborn child. Hope hires Mel as an assistant of sorts for the town’s only doctor (conveniently called “Doc”), who isn’t thrilled because Hope didn’t tell him and he hates change. Regardless, Mel makes herself indispensable thanks to her calming bedside manner and excellent medical and midwife skills, eventually winning over the curmudgeonly doctor as well. She also immediately catches Jack’s eye, and the two start dating after he ends his casual relationship with a longtime friend, Charmaine. Unfortunately, they eventually break up once Mel learns Jack and Charmaine are expecting. Mel packs up and heads back to Los Angeles, potentially for good.

Meanwhile, Preacher has a flirtation with Paige, but discovers she’s not who she says she is — she’s actually on the run for kidnapping her son, but Preacher can tell there’s something else missing from her story and wants to help her. Doc and Hope have been estranged for two decades and are finally getting around to officially divorcing, but consider rekindling their relationship. Calvin approaches Brady to work for him in his shady dealings at the pot farm.

OK, what about Season 2?

Well, funny you should ask. Although the first season ended on a major cliffhanger with Mel heading back to Los Angeles, she decides she needs to finish out her year-long commitment at Doc’s practice and visits her husband’s grave before making her way back to Virgin River. Throughout the season, she and Jack bond over past trauma (he has PTSD from war and is coping with alcohol; she, as you might remember, lost a husband and a child), and although Charmaine tries to get Jack to commit to her — they’re having twins, by the way — by the end of the season, Mel and Jack reconcile and get back together… just in time for her to discover him bleeding out on the floor of his restaurant from a gunshot wound.

Paige’s abusive husband tracks her down in Virgin River, and she accidentally kills him in self-defense,  — but Preacher and Connie (who understands her plight since she also came from an abusive home) help her hide the body and take care of Christopher when she’s forced to leave town. But she might not be able to stay hidden for long because her ex’s twin comes to town looking for his brother at the end of the season.

Charmaine moves to Virgin River to be closer to Jack and Doc when her pregnancy becomes complicated but is still devastated when Jack turns her down for Mel. And Hope and Doc continue dating in secret — even though Hope gives Muriel permission to date him — and at the end of the season, Doc proposes to Hope with her old engagement ring… but neglects to tell her about a serious doctor’s visit he had. Brody begins working for Calvin’s logging business even though he knows it’s actually just a front for drug smuggling. Big-city troubled teen Lizzie moves in with her aunt Connie, and influences squeaky clean Ricky to rebel.

So what do I need to remember from Season 3?

First things first: Jack lives (duh, he’s the romantic lead of the show), although he lost his memory from the shooting and doesn’t remember who actually shot him. He and Mel finally have a romantic night together… until his house burns down, causing them to have to move in together (perhaps prematurely). Everything seems to be going fine until Mel asks Jack if he’d be willing to have a baby with her. He’s terrified of becoming a father and breaks up with her because he can’t give her what she wants. However, the lovebirds reunite by the end of the season when Mel tells Jack that she’s pregnant — but he might not be the father, since she visited her sister during their breakup and went through IVF with the last of her and Mark’s embryos.

As if Jack’s relationship with Mel wasn’t complicated enough, Charmaine has a controlling new fiancé, Todd (Patrick Sabongui), who wants to adopt the twins from Jack so they can move as far away from Virgin River as possible. On top of that, Jack’s sister, Brie, moves to town, begins seeing Brady, and has a medical emergency that turns out to be a miscarriage. When Mel treats her, Brie reveals she was raped by her ex-coworker, and that’s why she sought refuge in Virgin River.

Meanwhile, Doc and Hope are back together, but separated for most of the season because she’s visiting her aunt in South Carolina. Unfortunately, Hope’s best friend Lilly develops a fast-moving cancer and dies quickly. Hope gets into a car accident that leaves her in dire condition as she’s headed back for the funeral.  Finally, Brady is arrested for Jack’s shooting when the gun is found in his car but continues to maintain his innocence. Oh, and a teenage boy arrives on Doc’s doorstep looking for his grandfather, Dr. Vernon Mullins. But Doc doesn’t have any kids, right?

What will happen in Virgin River Season 4?

Well, we’re going to need some answers re: Doc’s alleged grandson. We still haven’t found out who the father of Mel’s baby is, and we don’t know for sure who shot Jack. Will Brady be able to prove his innocence? And will Hope be okay?!
