Watch Stranger Things Now on Netflix.

Warning: This story contains spoilers from Stranger Things Season 4, Volume 2.

Joe Quinn already turned the world Upside Down after he heroically shredded Metallica’s song “Master of Puppets” as Eddie Munson in the Stranger Things Season 4 finale. But the metalhead took the legendary rock concert one step further. He met the real puppet masters pulling the guitar strings, Metallica themselves, this week at a rehearsal for their headlining gig at the Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago. During the private meet-up, Quinn jammed with the band and they gifted him a custom and signed B.C. Rich guitar just like the one Quinn played on the show.

Watch this fantastic meeting and jam sesh in the video below.

“It was amazing! Opportunities to play ‘Master of Puppets’ with the most iconic metal band of all time don’t come around very often,” Quinn tells Tudum. “A story for the grandkids.”

Not only that, but the band —  who previously told Tudum  they were “beyond psyched” that “Master of Puppets” was featured on the show — honored Quinn’s Dungeon Master during their Lollapalooza set Thursday evening. Footage of Eddie Munson rolled on the screen behind them as they played “Master of Puppets.”

But this wasn’t the first time Metallica has paid homage to Stranger Things. The band wore Hellfire Club shirts on tour after Season 4, Volume 2 was released and dueted the song with Eddie’s rendition from the show on TikTok. (And fans can take their love of this beautiful relationship even further with the new Metallica x Stranger Things t-shirt collection coming to the Netflix Shop soon.)

“The way the Duffer brothers have incorporated music into Stranger Things has always been next level,” said the band earlier this month. “But to have such a pivotal scene built around it... we were all stoked to see the final result. And when we did, we were totally blown away.”

Quinn, who’s played guitar since childhood, learned the “Master of Puppets” chords for his performance of the song in the series. “There was a backing track when we were playing on the day, but I was playing along to it,” he told Tudum earlier this month. He added, modestly, “I don’t know if anyone would want to hear it.” But the online reaction to the Twitter post from the @StrangerWriters account would disagree.

“Master of Puppets” was originally released on March 3, 1986 (around the same time Stranger Things Season 4 is set), and now, 36 years later, it’s reentered the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This is similar to the chart-topping resurgence of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill,” after that song was also heavily featured in Season 4 of the series.

Since he tragically dies at the end of the season, 1986 might not have exactly been Eddie Munson’s year. But 2022 certainly belongs to Joe Quinn — and “Master of Puppets.”
