You grew up listening to her music. You can quote from the movie without looking. All your favorite artists check her as an inspiration. And — finally — you' can watch the definitive doc about Selena Quintanilla. Selena y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy, out on Netflix now, tells the story of the beloved Mexican-American artist and her family band, who started out performing at quinceañeras and ended up selling out stadium tours. Directed by Isabel Castro (Mija, Darlin), the documentary is executive produced by Michele Anthony and Selena’s siblings, Suzette Quintanilla and AB Quintanilla III, who also played drums and bass guitar in the band. The film chronicles the late star’s life and legacy through never-before-seen footage from the Quintanilla family’s personal archive.

“As a filmmaker, I wanted to honor her extraordinary rise and enduring legacy, while also giving a window into her life behind the stage,” says Castro. “Through personal archive and intimate interviews with her family, the film reveals new dimensions of her journey that have never been seen before. I am deeply grateful to her family for their trust and support throughout this journey, and I can’t wait for a global audience to experience the magic, heart and community that Selena gave to all of us.”

What is the documentary about?

Selena y Los Dinos reveals the stunning origin and meteoric rise of Selena Quintanilla through the voices of those closest to her — her parents, Marcella and Abraham, sister Suzette, brother A.B. III, husband Chris, and bandmates. The documentary tracks the family’s origins from dinnertime performances at their Tex Mex restaurant in Lake Jackson to their hard-won ascendence to the top of Tejano charts as the world began to recognize Selena’s undeniable talent and sparkling charm. Using never-before-seen footage, including home videos that reveal Selena in a new light as a sister, daughter, and wife, Selena y Los Dinos tells the story of a family band and its superstar vocalist who broke down the walls between regional Tejano music and mainstream charts — all in the way she was raised: as a Quintanilla.

“We are Latinos ni de aqua, ni de allá, and hopefully somebody watching [this documentary] who might know nothing about us can identify with the [idea of not being from here nor from there],” Suzette tells Tudum.

“And that translates to so many different places, to so many different experiences,” Isabel also tells Tudum. “Yes, it is about pride and about being Latino in the United States, but it's also universal. It's about people who feel like they're not from one place nor another place, and they're trying to merge two worlds. Selena is for them.”
