The holidays are here, and the showrunners of The Sandman have come bearing gifts — namely, a deleted scene featuring Dream (Tom Sturridge) and Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste). Fans at Brazil’s CCXP already got a glimpse at it earlier this month, but now the scene, from the show’s beloved episode “The Sound of Her Wings,” is available for all to see. Check it out above.

“The Sound of Her Wings” introduces The Sandman’s version of Death, and she’s not what you might expect. The series’ interpretation of the character draws from author and showrunner Neil Gaiman’s original Sandman comic run; she’s a friendly face who welcomes the deceased to the other side with kindness and humility. Played by Killing Eve’s Howell-Baptiste, the presence of Death is, paradoxically, a kind of balm after the punishing experience of the episode’s immediate predecessor

In the newly released deleted scene, we get a glimpse of Death’s inner life, as she tells Dream the story of her brief stint as a mortal woman. “This deleted scene gives us a little more insight into why Death is the way she is. We hope you enjoy it,” showrunners and executive producers Neil Gaiman, Allan Heinberg and David Goyer say in a message accompanying the scene.

And here’s another gift: The Sandman is returning to Netflix soon with all-new episodes. Isn’t that a Dream come true?
