How do you soundtrack the apocalypse? For EDM superstar deadmau5, the world of Resident Evil posed a bigger challenge: How do you score for the aftermath of the apocalypse and the survivors who remain? Using analog synths and his signature groove propelling the action, deadmau5’s contribution complements Greg Reveret’s score that backdrops everything from giant caterpillar attacks to the hermetic enclave of New Raccoon City. His downbeat track “My Heart Has Teeth” pairs the airy vocals of Skylar Grey with a pulsating beat, offering uncanny atmospherics overlaying an attack of the undead.

deadmau5 recently caught up with Tudum and delved into how he engineered the sonic landscape of Resident Evil’s “suburban dystopia.”

Listen to Deadmau5 Discuss Crafting the New Track for ‘Resident Evil’The artist likes his horror high-tech.

What excites you most about working on this new take on Resident Evil? What are you most excited for fans of the series to see? I like my horror high-tech and experimental or sciencey, as opposed to just hack-and-slash. They approached me to do the new Resident Evil track and I’m a big fan of the franchise. I love the video games and the motion pictures that are out. What excites me most about working on this new take of Resident Evil is the way that this new lore is added that we hadn't really seen in the previous films. I think fans can expect your typical deadmau5 production, but this is definitely a little more grindy, a little more down tempo a vibe.

What feeling did you want to evoke for the show, and what were some of the influences you drew on for this track? Nostalgia of using an older analog synth to create a sci-fi, depressing sound. Just dystopian suburbia, I think is this vibe I’ve had in my head when making this song. It’s been pretty cool, because I like that weird corporate overtone of this entity that owns this village, if you would. So I just imagined what that would be like while roughly composing the song with, of course, the vocal accoutrement of Miss Skylar Gray, who was an amazing talent to work with, and she just nailed the lyrics.

What specific synths and sounds were you drawn to here? Definitely went more of an analog route. Just out of the sake of the trend of using a lot of analog synths in sci-fi features these days. I really drew on a lot of my older synths like the Junos and Jupiters for that thing. So that was pretty cool. Sometimes it’s just experimentation and the creative process of just doing your own thing and seeing if it fits well with that imagery.

What has the collaboration process been like with the show’s creative team? It was a treat to be able to apply my talents and accompany such a dynamic franchise that spans over all these different environments and settings and has all this intricate plot. It’s becoming a Star Wars in the sense that you could have this thing happening on this planet and then this totally unrelated side quest on another planet, which has carried the franchise through video games, motion pictures and now television.
