France’s most-wanted gentleman thief is on the run, but he’s heading back to Paris when Lupin returns for Part 3, now streaming on Netflix. In the trailer for the new volume, we see Assane Diop (Omar Sy) planning his most intense — and probably most insane — heist yet. The master of disguise isn’t afraid of danger, and this stunt is a 12 out of 10 on the danger scale.

When we last saw Assane, he was on the run from the police. While he may have successfully revealed a major insurance fraud perpetrated by mega-rich entrepreneur Hubert Pellegrini (Hervé Pierre) — the man responsible for framing his father and sending him to prison years ago — that wasn’t before Hubert framed him for a murder. Now the most-wanted man in France, Assane decides it’s better for his son, Raoul (Etan Simon), and ex, Claire (Ludivine Sagnier), if he falls off the radar for a bit.

But while in hiding, Assane can’t stand the suffering his family must endure because of him, so he returns to Paris to offer them a crazy proposal: Leave France and start a new life elsewhere. But the ghosts of the past are never far away, and an unexpected return will turn his plans upside down.

What happened in Lupin Part 1?

We first meet Assane in the process of a major heist at the Louvre, and while it ends with a car crashing into the iconic glass pyramid, he still manages to steal Marie Antoinette’s necklace — the same one his father, Babakar (Fargass Assandé), was accused of stealing years ago. It turns out that Babakar was framed by his boss, Hubert Pellegrini, with the help of now-police Commissioner Dumont (Vincent Garanger). After Babakar’s death, Pellegrini’s guilt-stricken wife Anne (Nicole Garcia) paid for Assane to attend a fancy private school. That’s where he became obsessed with the character of Arsène Lupin, the gentleman thief created by author Maurice Leblanc.

In the present day, Assane teams up with investigative journalist Fabienne Bertiot (Anne Benoît) to bring down Pellegrini, but she ends up dead under mysterious circumstances. Meanwhile, police inspector Youssef Guédira (Soufiane Guerrab) realizes the suspect in the necklace theft has been taking inspiration from Lupin. When Assane and Claire take their son, Raoul, on a birthday trip to a famous Lupin-related location, a hit man follows an order to kill Assane — but instead kidnaps Raoul. Just as Assane realizes Raoul is missing, he comes face to face with Guédira.

What happened in Lupin Part 2?

Guédira and Assane team up to track down Raoul, but before they find him, Guédira’s colleague, Lieutenant Sofia Belkacem (Shirine Boutella), arrests Assane. Guédira rescues Raoul anyway, and Assane arranges his safe return to Claire, who refuses to let Assane see him anymore.

Assane catches up with childhood friend Juliette Pellegrini (Clotilde Hesme) and inspires her mother to tell the truth about Pellegrini’s crimes. Anne confesses to Guédira, who is then able to arrest Pellegrini for fraud. But Pellegrini’s cronies help him get released from custody, and upon release, he gets back in touch with the hit man he had hired before. In a twist, Pellegrini kills the assassin and frames Assane for the crime. Police release Assane’s photo to the public, making him France’s most-wanted man.

But don’t worry, Assane has a plan to take Pellegrini down: At the Pellegrini Foundation’s charity concert, he sneaks into Pellegrini’s box and records him confessing to setting up his father in order to commit insurance fraud (as well as to having Fabienne Bertiot killed). Assane and Benjamin also inform the mega-rich donors that Pellegrini was routing much of their charitable donations to himself via an offshore account, but they’ve rerouted the money back to the foundation. The cops arrest Pellegrini and the corrupt Dumont, and Assane escapes. He stops long enough to say goodbye to Claire and Raoul before disappearing for a while.

What does the music of Lupin Part 3 mean?

Composer Mathieu Lamboley tells Tudum, “I wanted to have a special sound, a mix between contemporary music, hip-hop, and some classical. Actually, what I like about Lupin is that the main character, Assane Diop, tries to continue the legacy of the book in modern times. And that’s what I’ve tried to do in the music — to use my classical background with strings and orchestral music, but mix that with a modern sound.”

Can I see another clip from Lupin Part 3?

Sure thing! Here’s a death-defying clip that star Sy debuted earlier in 2023 at Tudum: A Global Fan Event in Brazil. In the tense sneak peek, which is preceded by an introduction from Sy, we see Assane scurrying through Parisian alleys as police sirens blare behind him. He seeks refuge on a rooftop, but a sniper crew is actually at the ready, complete with night vision goggles. It’s not long before Assane is running for his life. Once he reaches a major gap between rooftops, he’s left with two options: Stand still and get shot, or take a leap of faith. He attempts one of those jumps that definitely seems easier in the movies — and while he doesn’t miss, he doesn’t make it either. Our hero is left clinging to the edge of a roof with his life hanging in the balance.
