Who is Anna Delvey, really? In the words of journalist Vivian Kent (Anna Chlumsky), no one’s sure. But the Inventing Anna trailer offers a comprehensive look into the so-called scammer (or antiheroine, depending on whom you ask) who successfully tricked prominent artists, socialites, hotels and banks out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Based on Jessica Pressler’s viral 2018 story, Inventing Anna untangles Delvey’s story and explores how she faked her way into New York’s elite — and, ultimately, ended up charged with grand larceny and theft of services. The trailer offers a series of glitzy snapshots: Anna (Julia Garner) vacationing in Morocco with friends, meeting with high-profile investors and laying out her vision for an exclusive social club. We also get our first glimpse at her inner circle: celebrity trainer Kacy (Laverne Cox), Vanity Fair photographer Rachel (Katie Lowes) and hopeful filmmaker Neff (Alexis Floyd).
Interspersed with those clips, though, are shots of Anna incarcerated at Rikers and defending herself to Vivian (all while insulting her wardrobe, in true Anna Delvey fashion). “People are painting a public picture of me as some criminal,” Anna says. “That’s not my story.”
“Then what is your story?” Vivian asks.
Find out Feb. 11, and in the meantime, check out the trailer and first-look images below. Much like Anna’s plans, promises and persona, it’s all almost too good to be true.
