Daphne Bridgerton is the eldest Bridgerton daughter — and therefore the first to debut into society. She steps into the spotlight under intense scrutiny as she is named the Diamond of the First Water. Poised and determined, Daphne navigates the expectations placed on her with a clear goal: to secure a love match built on mutual respect.

To improve her prospects and counter her brother Anthony’s interference, she enters into a secret arrangement with Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings. The pair decide to present themselves as a couple to the ton while privately insisting the relationship is not real. But after a series of scandal-courting events occur, Daphne and Simon must wed. Through marriage, Daphne is forced to confront the realities of intimacy, communication, and power within a partnership.

Season 1

  • Daphne becomes the first Bridgerton daughter to enter society and is named the Diamond of the First Water by Queen Charlotte.
  • Daphne’s prospects are hindered by her brother Anthony Bridgerton, whose rigid control discourages suitable suitors.
  • While trying to avoid the attention of Nigel Berbrooke, Daphne meets Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings; their initial exchange is contentious.
  • At a later ball, Berbrooke follows Daphne into a garden and behaves inappropriately. Daphne strikes him, and Simon witnesses the incident.
  • To restore Daphne’s standing and to shield Simon from unwanted matches, the two agree to present themselves publicly as courting, forming a strategic arrangement rather than a romantic one. This dynamic also makes Daphne a more intriguing prospect for potential matches.
  • As they attend society events together, the arrangement develops into a genuine friendship and emotional connection.
  • Berbrooke attempts to use his garden encounter to pressure Anthony into forcing a match. Violet Bridgerton neutralizes the threat by exposing Berbrooke’s misconduct.
  • Seeking a prestigious match for her Diamond, Queen Charlotte encourages a courtship between Daphne and Prince Friedrich. Daphne considers the match, especially as Simon pulls away, but also recognizes her growing feelings for the duke.
  • When Prince Friedrich prepares to propose, Daphne withdraws before the proposal can be made. Simon finds her outside the ball, and they share a passionate moment before being discovered by Anthony.
  • Anthony demands Simon propose to Daphne to preserve her reputation. When Simon refuses, Anthony challenges him to a duel. Daphne intervenes and persuades Simon to marry her.
  • With the Queen’s approval, Daphne and Simon secure a special license to marry quickly.
  • After the wedding, Daphne realizes she has not been fully informed about intimacy and later learns that Simon has been deliberately preventing conception. Simon admits his vow not to have children stems from his relationship with his late father.
  • Daphne discovers letters Simon wrote to his father as a child, gaining insight into the emotional neglect that shaped his vow.
  • Simon proposes living separately rather than breaking his vow. Lady Danbury, who became Simon’s maternal figure following the death of his biological mother, ultimately confronts him about his grief and resistance to change.
  • By the end of the season, Daphne and Simon acknowledge their love and choose to recommit to their marriage with greater honesty, signaling a renewed partnership.

Season 2

  • Daphne returns to Mayfair from Clyvedon Castle and, now a married woman, joins her family during the social season.
  • Daphne offers support and perspective to Eloise Bridgerton as the younger sister prepares to enter society.
  • She also takes a keen interest in Anthony’s pursuit of a suitable wife, frequently challenging his rigid, duty-driven approach to marriage.
  • Daphne accompanies the family to Aubrey Hall, where she becomes better acquainted with Edwina and observes the growing tension between Anthony and Edwina’s sister, Kate.
  • During the country visit, Daphne witnesses a compromising moment between Anthony and Kate, leading her to recognize that Anthony’s feelings for Kate are neither platonic nor strategic as he carries on with his courtship of Edwina.
  • After Edwina calls off the wedding, Daphne directly tells Violet Bridgerton that Anthony’s heart lies with Kate.
  • Throughout the season, Daphne urges Anthony to stop hiding behind duty and to allow himself to choose happiness, drawing on her own experience of marriage to reinforce the point.

Notable scenes

Daphne and Simon at the Somerset House gallery in Season 1, Episode 3, “Art of the Swoon” (21:19–23:55)

Why it’s memorable: While viewing art at Somerset House, Daphne and Simon share a quiet moment away from the crowd as Simon shows her a painting he has donated. As they stand together, their hands gradually reach toward each other’s, a subtle gesture that signals a shift in their relationship. The restrained intimacy of the moment marks one of the first times their public arrangement gives way to private feeling, suggesting that their connection is becoming something more than strategic.

Daphne’s discovery of her own desire in Season 1, Episode 3, “Art of the Swoon” (37:26–38:25)

Why it’s memorable: Early in the season, Daphne begins her search for a husband with little understanding of intimacy or physical desire. After a conversation with Simon encourages her to learn more about herself, she later explores her own feelings in private. The scene underscores Daphne’s growing curiosity and agency, marking an early step in her personal awakening.

Daphne and Simon’s first kiss in Season 1, Episode 4, “An Affair of Honor” (33:26–36:59)

Why it’s memorable: Daphne and Simon share their first kiss in the garden during a ball, a moment charged with tension and lust. The kiss solidifies the attraction they have been trying to ignore — and directly leads to the consequences that follow when they are discovered by Anthony. It becomes a turning point that propels the story toward marriage, transforming their arrangement into something irreversible under society’s rules.

The wedding night in Season 1, Episode 5, “The Duke & I” (49:49–57:42)

Why it’s memorable: On their wedding night, Daphne and Simon finally confront the depth of their attraction. Simon admits that he loves Daphne, articulating emotions he has long tried to suppress. And, at last, Simon learns that Daphne feels the same. The scene represents the height of their romantic connection at that point in the season, capturing both the passion of new marriage and the vulnerability that defines their bond — before deeper conflicts emerge.

The honeymoon montage in Season 1, Episode 6, “Swish” (11:36–15:19)

Why it’s memorable: A montage follows Daphne and Simon during their honeymoon at Clyvedon, portraying a period of happiness and closeness as they settle into married life. Set to a classical arrangement of a Taylor Swift song, the sequence emphasizes their physical and emotional connection while briefly suggesting that the challenges of marriage have been left behind — an impression the season soon complicates.

Reconciliation at the final ball in Season 1, Episode 8, “After the Rain” (52:21–56:24)

Why it’s memorable: After a prolonged period of distance and conflict, Daphne and Simon have an emotional reunion at their first ball following the season’s upheavals. In a rain-soaked exchange, Daphne affirms her commitment to loving Simon fully, including the parts shaped by pain and loss. Simon, in turn, promises to try to be the partner Daphne deserves. The moment closes their Season 1 arc with renewed honesty and mutual resolve, signaling the possibility of happiness built on understanding rather than illusion.

Daphne calls Anthony out on choosing duty over love in Season 2, Episode 6, “The Choice” (13:33–16:15)

Why it’s memorable: Daphne confronts Anthony about weighing responsibility above his feelings. She directly names his feelings for Kate and identifies the way their father’s death still shapes his fear of passion and loss. Speaking from experience, she reminds him that choosing safety over love doesn’t actually protect you from heartbreak — it just drags it out. The conversation flips their usual dynamic in the best way: Daphne isn’t asking for guidance anymore; she’s giving it. It’s an honest sibling moment that shows how her own complicated path to a happy ending has turned her into one of the Bridgertons’ biggest believers in true love, and one of Anthony’s most important voices of reason.
