The forthcoming miniseries All the Light We Cannot See — based on Anthony Doerr’s award-winning novel of the same name — is shaping up to be as heartbreaking (and beloved) as its source material. And if you weren’t already planning on tuning in to the four-part adaptation, the all-star, award-winning duo of Mark Ruffalo and Hugh Laurie was just tapped to join the cast.

Ruffalo will play Daniel Leblanc, a locksmith and devoted parent who’s forced to flee Nazi-occupied Paris with his young daughter, Marie-Laure (Aria Mia Loberti). Together, they relocate to the seaside town of Saint-Malo, where they’re taken in by Daniel’s guarded and reclusive uncle, a veteran named Etienne (Laurie).

All the Light follows the Leblancs — and Werner, an orphan and soldier whose casting has yet to be announced — as they change each other’s lives and fight for survival during World War II. The series will be produced and directed by Stranger Things’ Shawn Levy and written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight. Screen newcomer Loberti was the first to be cast.

“To find an actress to play the iconic Marie-Laure — a young blind woman whose greatest strength is the tenacity of her hope and the power of her voice across the airwaves during wartime — was no small challenge,” Levy told Variety in December. “We never thought our path would lead to someone who has not only never acted professionally, but never auditioned before. It was a jaw-drop moment when we first saw Aria Mia Loberti, who is both a natural performer and an advocate for disability equity and representation.”

Characters including Werner, Nazi official Reinhold von Rumpel and the Leblancs’ housekeeper, Madame Manec, have yet to be cast, though — so you have plenty of time to emotionally prepare before All the Light’s star-studded cast breaks your heart.
